coach: Whoah, what the heck did that look like on the hat?
Where is the hat building instructions on line? Don't have much trouble with FDF's in the Blue Hills (not much water), but I will no doubt run into them in the future I and would like to be prepared with such an awesome defense system (our armed forces should be so well equiped).

jjcote: Step 1) Put blue ductape on the top and back of your hat.
Step 2) Apply Tanglefoot all over the blue tape.
Step 3) Don hat.
Step 4) Heh heh heh...

Phil did Frost! Yahoo!

PBricker: Different part of the Frost! I'd add one more step: don't touch the blue tape when you pick up the hat to go out the door! That tangletrap is a bitch to get off your fingers.

I'd say there's space for at least 100 FDF's, and I just do the back half of the hat. I think Peter holds the record at 60-something.

JHen: I was too lazy to make a special trip for blue duct tape so used the silver which I always have on hand. It works just fine.
I don't run as far as Phil so my totals are not as awesome, but I routinely pick off 4 or 5 just walking down the driveway to get the mail.

WARNING - Bonnie borrowed the hat and her ponytail bounced up into the sticky zone. Yuck was the word. Gotta work on a modified design for those with long hair.

jjcote: Yeah, even my experimental version using packing tape for the adhesive had that problem — ineffective against bugs, but it snagged Nancy's 'do. I'd say bundle up the hair in a bun or hairnet or something. Women know how to do that.

PBricker: I think I'll try half with blue, half with silver, to see if it makes any difference. I'm guessing not, or not much.

Charlie: So how do you apply the tangletrap?

#  Posted 2007-07-11 09:59:35
PBricker: That's easy. It comes with a brush attached to the inside of the lid. And it is so gloppy that it doesn't drip at all moving from the can to the hat. Leave some blue tape unbrushed so you can pull the tape + FDF's off the hat without touching the sticky stuff. But before pulling it off, I like to leave the hat around the house somewhere for my family to gawk at.

barb: Where is this run? What is the Frost?

#  Posted 2007-07-11 17:18:47
jjcote: Somewhere around here, I assume. The Frost is the Robert Frost Trail, which, on a section closer to Phil's house, is apparently notorious for FDFs.

PG: The Robert Frost Trail connects a bunch of conservation/public land in amherst and surrounding towns. It runs from The Notch (Mt. Norwottuck) on the south side of Amherst to the Mt. Toby area in Sunderland -- which used to make it 33 miles long and a great training run for ultras. More recently it has been extended a few more miles NE into Montague.

The section that Phil runs regularly, and where he worries about meeting FDFs and UMass deans, is pretty close to where he works at UMass. He actually lives in Northampton on the west side of the Connecticut River (all the Frost is on the east side).
