Ruth:
The Maccabiah Games, which are organized every four years in Israel under the auspices of the Maccabi Federation, is an international Jewish athletic event similar to the Olympics. The event is named for the Jewish warrior Judah Maccabee, who fought against the ancient Greeks.

For the first time, orienteering is on the list of sports that can be in the games. They need to know who may be interested in competing for the USA. This was the final decision of the ISC (International Sports Committee) of the 20th Maccabiah.

In order to be part of the coming Maccabiah games, they need to register at least 50 orienteers from 5 countries in addition to Israel. They are asking people interested to email Doron Kaynar-Kissinger at doronknr@gmail.com with your details (name, home address, e-mail, age and gender), so that they know your intention. Maccabi USA also needs to know. Let me know if you are interested and I will let them know who else is interested in competing.

I'm sorry for such short notice, but they want to know by March 15. Doron wrote to me and said he is very busy, so I assume a couple of days late won't be a problem. This is not a final commitment but if they can't get the interest, orienteering will not be included in the Games.

Thanks,
Ruth

Ruth:
I got another email recently requesting Jewish orienteers to sign up with Maccabi USA if you are interested in possibly competing in the 2017 Maccabiah Games. Orienteering is one of the sports on the list. I just signed up on the lengthy application which was what I was told to do by the Maccabi USA people. The Games will be July 2017 I think.
