Running away is always a bad idea with a dog - four legs is just faster over a short distance. This was a rescue dog, so I suspect excess physical violence in its past was the reason it was so mental. It's not the dogs that I have a problem with really, it's the (bad) owners.

Sometimes think that it's the owners who should be put down rather than the dogs.

Argentina has its share of wild dogs too (especially in rural villages), though didn't come across anything really menacing. Chile also has a reputation for strays (apparently a large group of them have taken up residence in the grounds of the presidential palace) but didn't see as much there.
