What did the times look like for the top men? I made a 10-miler team once by being the 12th woman to show up...learned a lot training with them and was arguably #6 fastest by the end. Good stuff.

It's hard to say because there are always multiple tryouts so you never know who the fastest runners on the team will be just by who you're running against.

Today there were only three of us; one Soldier beat me by about 30 seconds and the other was a few minutes behind us.

When I tried out in Colorado, I came in 3rd of 9 in the first time trial but the fastest runners weren't at that race (although the guy who came in first ran two extra miles accidentally and still beat me...humbling). On an eight man team, there were only 2 or 3 slots actually open because of the prior year's returning members (one of whom was in my platoon). It didn't help that my second time trial was slower.

One thing that Ft. Carson, Ft. Leonard Wood, and Ft. Hood have in common is that they all tend to sport some fast runners--under 60 minute runners--and a deep bench.

I don't think I have a prayer of getting that fast, only shaving a few minutes if my training goes well. Hopefully that is enough to make the Ft. Hood team.

Sounds like you had a great experience on a ten miler team and did very well. Which post were you representing?

Ft. Lewis back in my young CPT days. I ended up not getting to go because they messed up our registration so only 6men and 6 women had slots. They originally signed me up as #6, but one of the other women protested that she had been faster in the TT. True. She was also pregnant and limiting her heart rate. But she was also a friend and obviously cared about it more than I did, plus I had developed some wicked plantar fasciitis, so I didn't fight it. I think my Iraq 10-milers and half marathons were actually faster, anyway! But I learned a lot about being a "real runner" from those ladies.

I might have been able to make Germany's team if I ever attempted. It would have been right on the cusp for the last spot. I have realized that it commonly doesn't work out for me. For example. I would by trying to Fort Huachuca's team but instead of qualifying, I am going to WP and instead of racing, I plan on orienteering.

Jordan, when I tried out at Ft. Carson they told me that I could also send them times from other certified races--I think that might be a way you could be competitive despite missing the time trial to O. Go for it.

Strongly support some more "running" training for the orienteers on the military team. Our selection dynamic is a bit different than for WOC, at least at the moment.

Josh, I would but I am planning on orienteering the weekend of the Army 10miler instead. I have and still am doing some trail/road racing here in AZ.
