Kitch:
had a spell of moaning that I hadn't been put in the junior squad.
I just used to think he should shut up
and I got on with the job of getting selected next year

I have sympathy. Getting into ScotJOS was hard when I was young. They used to take 3 of each age class to JIRC and 4 to JHI. I got on a British Orienteering tour (2nd year 16) before I got picked for ScotJOS. It seems to be equally tough just now.

My Dad remains blissfully unaware of orienteering - which I quite like. He was shocked when my mum's copy of focus came through the door with me on the cover a few years ago ('its cause I won some stuff Dad').

I've never moaned about selection: james has never been in scotjos because his results have never been good enough (though he did get on a BO M16 tour and a couple of World Schools).

He's about the only one outside the squad who's stuck with the sport. If he gets in, they'll chuck one of his pals out, probably to be lost to the sport. On balance, I'd rather that didn't happen.

My folks are also blissfully unaware of orienteering. My dad keeps telling me I'm too old for exercise, as he has done for the last 20 years.

As I recall, your dad does at least like to tell tales of your footballing youth....

My dad, on seeing me in running kit on Monday night, asked if I was off to ESOC ladies running with my mum. 20 years too old and 5 mins a mile too slow Dad (no offence - love the ESOC ladies - but it is just a gossip-swapping session, allegedly).

"Milton Damerel FC sportsman of the year award, 1978-9": The season after my big-money transfer from Shebbear United.
We were by some way bottom of the league, as Shebbear had been the previous year. But I did score an away goal (St Giles 17 Milton Damerel 1)

What's do you mean by the comment about attitude to Nat 5s? Just interested in his point of view.

Nat 5s ... don't get me started. Ooops, you did.
He hasn't been taught anything since Christmas, just going over and over the same old stuff for revision. He has zero chance of exceeding expectations, because the expectation is to get an A. I've been trying to persuade him that revision is cheating and he should get on and learn some stuff, but that doesn't seem to be school policy.

"I feel there's little point working hard for them because they don't feel like a real qualification"

That's really interesting - I do teach new stuff after the Prelims in February - we do a whole new topic in March / April!
For someone like James, they are really just a warm-up and practice for Highers and Advanced Highers.
I feel really sorry for the Nat 4 kids who have genuinely finished their entire course by March, because they only have internal assessment and no external exam at all.

"Revision is cheating". Is that what you tell your thermodynamics class? ;)

Yes I do, weren't you listening? Actually, it may have been in the "revision" tutorial which is fine to skip, in my opinion ;)
