A way to fix this weak point is to get really heavy thread or suture material and a big sewing needle.
Use a small drlll bit to make parallel holes close together on both sides of broken band, then use the doubled heavy thread on the needle to make a running lock type suture to pull the two ends together.
The apply "goriila glue" to the thread and knots to make a nearly wear proof and comfortable repair.

Good call Carl! I've had a Speedy Stitcher for 50 years, along with a big spool of waxed thread. It was originally offered only by LL Bean, back in the day when Leon Leonwood was still alive and sending out his hand-made catalogs in the mail.

I repair a couple of items every year with it! But unfortunately the Speedy Stitcher, along with most of Leon's other unique products, have been dropped by the current LL Bean catalog, in favor of 'shearling slippers' and 'ultrasoft cotton comforters.'

Rugged Maine outdoorsman Leon Leonwood must be rolling in his grave!

A fine handy source of waxed thread that often comes in handy is dental floss (if you pick the right type).
