Even though the name sounds like it should be Scottish games of guys in kilts throwing giant logs, I just wanted to let everyone know that this is a kick-ass orienteering event. Who knew? ;-)

The Highlander doesn't need a participation limit to stir interest...

Guy, that was a mean-spirited comment. Remember that people can't read sarcasm, or see a smile, when you type things online.

@acjospe: ??? Not sure what you are finding offensive? I read GuyO's comment as a follow up to JJ's "bet it won't sell out", - both of them making a dig at events that set limits on the number of entrants. Nothing indicated to me that they think the HH is anything less than a great event.

I must have missed JJ's comment. I read Guy's comment as an insult to Patrick's event, not to the HH.

Edit- I see JJ's comment above now. That was funny, without being mean.

Edit edit - in light of that, Guy's comment is less mean. Sorry y'all.

To fully understand this thread, you also need to read this other thread

Back to the initial thrust of this threads topic though, I am familiar with the Hudson Highlander and know exactly what it is. Similarly, I know what the Billygoat and Blue Hills traverse are too. Like Tapio though, I had no idea what the Seattle Adventure Running Tournament was and, given the distance, didn't even bother to investigate. From now on though, I know exactly what it is too.

I knew what the Seattle Adventure Running Tournament was because I read the meet info. But to be honest (speaking as one of the people who has participated in the Billygoat the most times), I almost didn't sign up for the "Billygoat Run", held at a ski area, in 1984 (my first year), because I wasn't sure it was orienteering. It sounded like it might be just a brutal trail run (and back then there was no website I could check).

I sure hope the HH will get at least a couple of adventure racers..

It usually does.

At least one is highly likely.

Tapio:
The name "Seattle Adventure Running Tournament" includes a misleading description of the event. Jukola, Tiomila, Flying Pig, Hudson Highlander, Laramie Daze, etc. - no such confusion in the names of these well-established orienteering events. Come up with a cool name and use "Seattle Sprint Orienteering Tournament" as the description for the event!

The point being that "Adventure Running" is closer to "Adventure Racing" than "Highlander" is to "Highland Games". (Whether that's true may be a matter of opinion, of course.)

Tapio:
"Adventure Running" or "Adventure Racing", neither one implies orienteering...

I do not think we shell hang so tight to word orienteering in this country anymore. Let's be honest, when orienteering word mentioned in general public, what percentage of people can give a more or less definitive answer, what it is all about. No such problem in most of Europe. Call it anything you want as long as people are willing to come and try your event.
