The moment you have all been waiting for... the start location for this year's Highlander is Kanawauke Picnic Area (41.233713, -74.116806). We have updated the event website with this information.

Please NOTE that there will be 32 controls on the highlander course. If you have registered for the highlander using an SI number that cannot accommodate [edit] > 30 controls you will need to either loan a higher capacity stick or, if you have a higher capacity stick, you will need to update the SI number you will use. We will be sending all affected registrants a separate email on this topic.

Additional meet notes will be up early next week.

Looking forward to seeing everyone! The leaves should be optimal (?)

Joe:
maps?
Oct 7, 2015 5:07 PM #
acjospe:
Joe, you don't get the map until the race starts.
Oct 7, 2015 5:12 PM #
chinghua:
Joe, your custom maps are not ready yet, anyway ;P
Oct 7, 2015 5:16 PM #
jjcote:
At this point, I'll bet that we're using either Sebago or Surebridge, at least.

eldersmith:
I'm pretty sure that SI-6 sticks handle 64 controls (and if the control boxes were configured suitably could be used on courses with up to 192 controls).
Oct 7, 2015 9:26 PM #
geof:
It is only sticks from 2,000,000-2,999,999 (SI-8), all others can handle 36+ controls. Note that Lowlander can use SI-8 as they have less than 32 controls (just).
Oct 7, 2015 9:36 PM #
Canadian:
Not true geof. The old SI 5s can only handle 30 as well. I don't know if anyone registered would possibly use an SI-5 but I definitely know there are still some out there.
Oct 7, 2015 9:45 PM #
geof:
See http://www.teutsch.ca/files/SPORTident_Control_Car... . HVO have sicks in the 300,000-400,000 range which will take 36 controls - I checked them today. These are actually the ones we will be giving out as loaners. They are, however, a bit slower than SI-8 and above.
Oct 7, 2015 10:09 PM #
edwarddes:
While the SI-5 does record that you were at 36 points, it only records the time you punched for 30 of those. Those sticks you have in the 300-400000 range are all SI-5s.

vmeyer:
As Ed says, no splits for spots 31-36 on the Si-5 cards. Si-6 cards hold 64. So, please do not send people out on the Highlander with Si-5 or Si-8 cards, or pcards, for that matter. It totally hoses the post race analysis, RG and AP splits, etc.

I can bring about 25 loaner Si-6 to UNO this weekend to hand off to someone, just let me know if you would like to borrow them.
Oct 7, 2015 10:23 PM #
JanetT:
How many controls will be on the Lowlander? Will my SI 5 card be sufficient?
Oct 7, 2015 11:07 PM #
iansmith:
Let's send Joe out with pin punching.
Oct 7, 2015 11:15 PM #
geof:
Thanks for the info above, we nearly blew this as we didn't know about the lack of times for 31-36. I did wonder about the 30 + 6 on the SI description.

Valerie, we will gratefully take you up on your offer. Could you give them to Guy at Boulder Dash (or if you don't see him to Ed Hicks). I will make sure they get back to you soonest. Thanks.

Janet: SI 5 is fine for Lowlander, there are about 22 controls.
Oct 7, 2015 11:25 PM #
vmeyer:
Geof, will do.
Oct 7, 2015 11:27 PM #
jjcote:
On the other hand, people who are using loaner sticks probably have a significantly reduced chance of finishing... :-) [edit -- upon further thought, I take that back -- some of the most stalwart orienteers are early adopters who still have SI-5 sticks, and loaning them a different SI-5 would of course be pointless.]
Oct 7, 2015 11:28 PM #
jjcote:
And Valerie, since I had already signed up, I'm planning on one final hurrah for my SI-6*.
Oct 8, 2015 12:23 AM #
vmeyer:
J-J - :) Not sure why * didn't work this weekend, when I never had issues before.
Oct 8, 2015 12:46 AM #
tRicky:
I have SI-11 if someone wants to fly me out to make sure it works.
Oct 8, 2015 4:03 AM #
Joe:
You can have my map tRicky
Oct 8, 2015 4:27 AM #
chinghua:
Thank you, Valerie!

GuyO:
All of the cadets registered for the Highlander course have SI-8s...

Does anyone with USMAOC know if the team has higher capacity cards?
Oct 8, 2015 8:59 AM #
GuyO:
@J-J: The SI# you provided had 8 digits, please send me the correct one. Thanks!
Oct 8, 2015 10:19 AM #
GuyO:
Current Highlander course registrants' SI-cards:

SI-5 ...... 6
SI-6 ..... 13
SI-6* ..... 1 [edit]
SI-8 .... 18
SI-9 ...... 5
SI-10 .... 2
SI-11 .... 4
rental .. 1

So, as of this writing, we need 25 SI-6 or SI-9+ cards...
Oct 8, 2015 2:34 PM #
jjcote:
Guy: The SI number I sent you does indeed have 8 digits, and it is correct. It's an SI-6* (ess eye six star).
Oct 8, 2015 3:05 PM #
GuyO:
So the "*" means it has an out-of-range-for-SI-6 number? How did you get one like that?
Oct 8, 2015 4:39 PM #
jjcote:
It's not an SI-6, it's an SI-6*. Totally different stick. Used to be listed in the lists of such things, though they seem to have obliterated it. I bought it. Years ago.
Oct 8, 2015 8:50 PM #
edwarddes:
Its an SI-6 that always works in 192 control mode. This can break software that isn't expecting it, and since there is very little documentation about it, and no listing of it publicly on their site anymore, its easy to overlook until someone like JJ shows up and breaks everything :)
Oct 8, 2015 9:19 PM #
jjcote:
Not "someone like J-J", just me. I've never heard of anyone else having one. It almost always works (except with the standalone splits printer), but this will be its swan song.
Oct 8, 2015 9:30 PM #
edwarddes:
There is at least one other one that I have seen in the US, but I don't remember who had it.
Oct 8, 2015 9:51 PM #
edwarddes:
Thayer Raines also has one, and is the only other one that show up as every having been used in eventreg.
Oct 8, 2015 10:00 PM #
vmeyer:
JJ, will you let me borrow it on Saturday, please? I want to see if the older version of OE2010 recognizes it still. Otherwise, I don't get why I never had issues before but I did last weekend.
Oct 8, 2015 11:48 PM #
jjcote:
Yeah, I'll have it in my bag.
Oct 9, 2015 3:55 AM #
Juffy:
FFS JJ, this is why we can't have nice things.
Oct 9, 2015 6:45 AM #
tRicky:
Can't believe you purchased a defective SI stick. Having said that, mine didn't punch one of the bricks on a sprint I did recently when I failed to go to it so I should trade it in.

On a related note, this event sounds awesome. Eight hour time limit? Just my type of orienteering event!
Oct 9, 2015 12:53 PM #
jjcote:
It's the Best Stick Ever. It's been awesome for me. Except when the download equipment was defective. But now I have a shiny new stick. Literally shiny. And it shines. Because Valerie is so nice to me. And the Highlander totally rules.
Oct 9, 2015 1:30 PM #
Bernard:
As everyone knows, besides being the most important 26K orienteering event in the world, the Highlander also hosts the most prestigious post-race BBQ in the orienteering world.
On this years menu are: Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Cheese burgers, Chili ( meatless and with meat), veggie burgers, chips, drinks, soup and other stuff. Suggestions are welcome.
Oct 9, 2015 2:10 PM #
jjcote:
Noodles. And some sweet stuff. And shredded cheese for the chili.
Oct 9, 2015 2:21 PM #
Bernard:
OK. Ah yes... Pasta was already on the list.
Oct 9, 2015 10:49 PM #
peggyd:
And a guest grill master (helping, not on the menu): Max A.
Oct 12, 2015 4:58 AM #
chinghua:
Thanks for volunteering the volunteer, Peggy! Looking forward to meeting Max and Samantha.
Oct 12, 2015 11:54 AM #
tRicky:
I would like to second Max A's nomination.
Oct 14, 2015 1:29 PM #
Bernard:
Max and I made plans to have him help when we were at Pineridge. I told him to bring his chefs apron.
