once I thought I followed pickle creek from the natural area to hawn, and it seemed to go by/through quite a bit of private property including a gun club with its own duck pond. but this map seems to show otherwise. http://mdc.mo.gov/sites/default/files/nat_areas/72...

Yes, Hawn and PSNA share about a 400m border but not along Pickle Creek.
From the twin bridges (man-made, not natural) half-way the PS trail go due east until you hit the boundary fence (well-marked) between PSNA and HSP. In HSP, head N or NE -- nice hike. I've led one Sierra Club hike there and plan to lead a hike from PSNA to HSP picnic shelter (with shuttle).
It is weird that every time I turn around and go back to PSNA, I always lose map(s) contact and feel a bit lost - need to walk due west and relocate. That's how I found that the private area just north of PSNA has parking and several deer hunting stands -- probably 'pay to hunt'. I've had no problem (ie no people) when I've accidentally ventured on private land but a local has warned us about a land-owner S of HSP who strongly (ie with gun) dislikes trespassers.

I've heard about the guy to the south of the park from superintendent. Would be an interesting hike.

Big burn area behind the HSP campground (where the scout camp is). Looked fresh on sunday. Stumps and logs still smoldering. That area was in need of clearing.
