With the hip? I have become something of an expert at one particular problem with the hip.
I believe it's bursitis, as my knee doesn't hurt too. I'm terrible about stretching my hip flexors/IT band/pretty much everything, so sometimes it gets ouchy for a few days. That said, I've only ever had one doctor (and my masseuse) semi-confirm this, and no MRI or anything on the joint to make sure there's nothing else going on there. With my upcoming heavy season, maybe I should give it a good once over?
I also probably need to step back and do a gradual increase again to long mileage, since I have the time to build in a low-impact way over the winter. But I love to run long! :)
Any thoughts are appreciated from someone with hip knowledge!!
But it could be FAI, or a stress fracture (although I doubt the 2nd):
As the pain isn't only in the hip 'point' area, but also the groin.
But I'm hoping for bursitis. ;)
Unfortunately the hip can hide a lot of problems. A mri is probably necessary to be sure but a plain hip x-ray may help too. I would not advise a wait and see approach. I did that 3 years ago and paid much bigger than this year where I was more aggressive. Dr Duncan in Bryn mawr does a good job of evaluating hip pain.
Indeed, I've probably waited way to long as it is, looking back, it looks like 9 years since I actually saw my GP about it, to no effect other than "it looks like XX, you need to stretch." And I'm lazy and prefer that things just 'go away', so haven't followed up even though it's continued in some form or another since then. No issues during my June > Sept training this year though ... the cold seems to exacerbate.
Thanks for the thoughts, particularly the specialist. I might already have some useful pelvic CT scan results, after dealing with diverticulitis a couple of years ago, if I can dig them up.
