Hi Shep - got a NIN song to cover this email I received:

'The Type EA 189 engine built into your Octavia with the VIN TMBKE61Z7C2014982 is affected by software that causes discrepancies in the values for oxides of nitrogen (NOx) during laboratory testing.

This means Volkswagen Group Australia has initiated a recall on your vehicle.

Rest assured ŠKODA will cover the cost of all necessary measures to rectify the issue. Volkswagen Group is working to design a technical solution for each vehicle. We will contact you as soon as we have this. For now you don’t need to take any action.

ŠKODA Australia realise that the emission issue has rightly shaken the faith of our customers and for that we are deeply sorry.

from what i've read the VW engines still meet the emissions standards here, it's just illegal to have the alternate map for use under testing...

notice how none of the other manufacturers have said a word. i bet this is the motoring equivalent of doping in cycling ;)

I suspect you're right. It's also a pretty sad reflection on how pissweak our emission standards are that VW (probably) haven't broken any Australian laws....

put things into context but, the Ford F-150 has been the best-selling vehicle in the US for more than 30 years, and one of the newest petrol ones gets 16.6 litres per 100 kms! compared to a Golf diesel which gets 7.8L/100km (both stats from https://www.fueleconomy.gov, both those figures are higher than what the manufacturers claim here, eg supposedly 4.9L/100km for the Golf - the tests must be pretty different)... no doubt the content of the emissions are different, but surely the sheer bulk of crap coming out the back of those American Fords is a case of pot/kettle...

Then there was the Ford Territory in Australia, which until a couple of years ago had worse fuel economy then event the F-150.

On another tack Shep, maybe I should get into NIN, because my former rock hero has gone and done this.
