Would be interesting to hear more about the robot orienteer...

This MIT team has several robots; this one is old and has been receiving a makeover with new OS and software. Their prof thinks it might be neat for them to teach the robot how to orienteer. I don't know many details, but I think they took data this time, presumably a bunch of video and sonar data, and perhaps the next task will be to be able to recognize an orienteering flag and navigate to it. Not really sure where it is going, but I think the prof wants the students to decide what happens next.

So the robot just followed the commands of it's operator -- who did the actual orienteering?

Perhaps some of the Catching Features code could help a robot "read" a map...

It would seem fairly straightforward to input the map to the robot memory, and with an initial GPS co-ordinate location for the start, it could go straight line ( what some orienteers try to do). Uncrossable features would be problem, but if it could recognize them from the map, it should be able to work out the shortest route around them.

I will keep you updated as this project progresses! Their prof says that if the weather is OK they will come to the December orienteering introductions.
