Particularly if you do some serious downhills. ie the mountain side in Bragg.
I'm not sure where it would be all that relevant on your usual trails

At home I would probably just drop it while I was on ice. Without a dropper I just lower the seat a little bit in winter and give up a bit of leg extension.
