Chas:
I agree far inferior to any sort of running but i can't think of a better method of cross training. It certainly beats swimming or, heaven forbid, aqua jogging. I do hate the faff though and great rant nevertheless.

There's nothing wrong with mountain biking. All you have discovered is that cyclepaths are shit. Especially in deepest Englandshire.

Best to stick to gravel paths and tracks for mountain biking.

The best way to enjoy moutainbiking is to do it on a road with a road bike.

I always have high hopes for mountain biking. It should be good. You're outside in the fresh air, doing some cardio. But it is always such a let down. At least with aquajogging / swimming the expectation is that it is going to be totally shite.

The best bit of the cycle was when I abandoned ray and took the road through box hill. Nice smooth surface. Shame the tyres were so sticky. I agree with Nixon. Road tyres on a road are the only way.

C'mon, even orienteering is pretty if you do it in the wrong place/time. MTB centres like Glentress can be pretty good fun. Road bikes/tyres are fine as long as they stay attached to the road :( But I'm with Chas and Cat, any form of running is much less faff.

I agree with the overall sentiment - but just like running I still prefer off road given a choice.

It sounds like you just had the wrong machine for the job - Just as you'd wear dobs instead of normal trainers in mud, this ride probably needed a Fat Bike
