Is that a accepted leveling factor. I find that I can run in the woods around my house without a compass pretty well. Guessing partially or mostly due to my familiarity

Generally. I wouldn't claim it completely makes up for massive terrain familiarity but it makes small errors on certain kinds of legs more likely and quite enormously increases the difficulty of relocating if and when you make a larger error when you can't check precisely what direction any feature you try to relocate by is running. Though I'd say it's really more useful as a way of forcing you to pay attention to everything useful on the map rather than rely exclusively on your compass for long stretches mid-leg.
