I was curious about the route to control 2. You took the first turn to the left and zig-zaged to the control. I was wondering if going a bit farther to the next turn would be better because of fewer turns.

Maybe head to head comes into play, wanting to stay in the pack for longer...

1-2 is uphill, so you're going slow enough that the turns aren't a problem from either reading the map or physically making the turn. If it was 2-1 downhill, then your route is way better because you flow right through all the junctions without having to make hairpin turns (in fact I took that route later when I was skiing the course backwards).

Short cut much? or did you guys stay on trails?

No just on trails. The snow would have been ok for shortcuts, but that's too easy.
