Looking extra cold in Sweden these days. Wanna take a trip down here sometime soon? I'd love to show you guys around!

We're coming down to Alicante in February, which isn't your neck of the woods but at least it will be warmer!

When in February? There are a few races relatively nearby in Murcia and Lorca that month. I believe TGIF already test ran the courses.

I'm going from the 20th to the 28th, though many of my clubmates are going for longer. There are races that we're doing on the 20th and 21st (only the 21st for me).

Woo Costa Cálida! Tough area. Get ready for sliding down rocky hillsides. It's going to be warm as well (well maybe chilly in the evenings). It was about 26° in the World Cup in April.

I'll be there as well. Look forward to seeing you there!

We may go to Alicante immediately after the Linne group, or maybe a week later. No plans to race, though, so I don't think we'll bump into you...

I've got plans to meet up with Emily Kemp and some Finnish girls in Barbate for the AOM that week. Why can't you guys all come to the same place down here?
Jan 18, 2016 10:31 PM #
You know, we first considered Barbate but it seems to me that the terrain around Alicante is more what I want in February (fast & fun). Maybe I'm wrong? Also, direct flights Oslo-Alicante...

Which location would be more fun for non-orienteers? With a baby?

Either area would be great. It'll be warm during the day (between 15 and 25°). Alicante probably has a bit more tourism than Barbate, but both are big tourist spots. I've never had to think about a baby in Spain. If he likes paella, Alicante would probably be better.

He hasn't liked any of the solid food we've tried to give him so far so maybe paella would do the trick.

Barbate sand dunes are absolutely sweet terrain Cristina! I actually remember Alicante being much tougher, but that was in the mountains. Can't remember if I ever did dunes near there.

The dunes are what interests me about both places, I think the Alicante coastal stuff looks pretty sweet. The best solution is, of course, to make two trips. This year the direct flight probably wins, so next time it'll be Barbate instead.

Guardamar is pretty sweet. The beach next to it is beautiful... and a nudist beach. My friend and I walked down it after a session there and felt quite out of place. Alicante is nice. I would recommend getting out on the Santa Pola map with all the green while there. And the Alicante Ciudad map. It has a really cool castle section.

Both places are really, really fun to orienteer in. The advantage of Barbate is that Gibraltar is about 1.5 hours away. Why Gibraltar, you ask? Because Barbary Apes, Europe's only monkeys!
Jan 20, 2016 2:31 PM #
That's another reason to wait on Barbate -- we should go when the little dude will appreciate the monkeys rather than just ignore them. They'll just look like hairy babies to him at this point.

On a different note, since Ross doesn't log anymore, I'll leave this here (scroll down):
Jan 20, 2016 2:45 PM #
But yes, monkeys should be duly appreciated, and so a trip down there later might be appreciated. Maybe Alli and I can even join you and demonstrate proper appreciation of monkeys.

None of the images show up...
Jan 20, 2016 2:59 PM #
Weird. I'm browsing in Firefox on a PC and can see them fine.
Jan 20, 2016 3:25 PM #
Ah, nevermind, it was my fault. Ross should definitely go look.

Found it :) thanks! At first I only saw the WOC Team prep photo, but I will go and track down the Pretty Hate Machine song to see what my sound track should be...
