Discussion: Ultra Long Turkey Run

Any interest from the SandgrOpers in attending/volunteering in running an unofficial long distance metrO/sprint run in the weeks before the Ultra Long?

Wayne and I were thinking of a 21km line course on the following maps: Swanbourne, Mt Claremont, Bold Park, City Beach North, City Beach.

After the finish - have a big social BBQ brunch and chillax.

Any suggestions for a catchy name?

You could add in Churchlands if you need to make it longer since it joins to City Beach North. I hereby approve the use of this map and Herdsman Lake is right next door for barbecue frivolity.

Also, 'ultra long sprint'. Haha.

Some ideas for names: Mammoth run, Grudge run, Ultra Long MetrO-SprintO Brunch Run :)

2 minute intervals?

The final control should be at Garvey Park with the potential for a swim leg. In that instance you'd start on the Churchlands map and finish at Swanbourne (or Mosman Park).

That is one VERY long swim leg and I'm sure it would be good training for the real ultra long...

You could cut the corner at Maylands Peninsula (and use that map too followed by the Black Swan Island map) or just make it a packraft leg.

Anyway I digress, again. Will this event be advertised to the general orienteering populace?

Great idea. I won't be able to attend, but very good idea.

Very great.

I remember haphazardly piecing most of those maps together years ago into one 'super-map' which I never used. An old map of Reabold ruined it by not quite lining up with everything else.
Never used it though and probably won't be able to a) run that far by the required time or b) get to Perth for it.

I have a 2003 mapbook at work that we can always use. I know those maps all go together...

Hillarys --> whatever the map is just south of Hepburn Ave (Sorrento/Marmion) --> Star Swap North and South --> Carine --> Gwelup (east and west) --> Stirling --> back through Gwelup--> Trigg --> City Beach N (might be a little gap between those two) --> Churchalnds -->Herdsman and Lake Monger--> Churchalnds --> City Beach S --> Bold Park/Reabold --> Mt Claremont --> Swanbourne--> Mosman Park --> Nth Freo (not sure how the last two link up.

I'm sure Juffy can do better than that though...

Mosman Park and North Freo link up quite nicely although neither reaches far enough north to get to Swanbourne. There is a rather large gap between Trigg & City Beach North. The existing (black & white) Herdsman Lake map doesn't cover the east side so wouldn't join up to Lake Hunger although the one I mostly completed would.

If this page on the OWA site was updated, it'd be easier to see.

I'd do this, if possible from a work perspective.

Isn't there anything between Trigg and City Beach N? If not, apologies for not mapping it when I lived there.

and by the last two linking up, I mean how the last two link to the rest of the list (ie Swanbourne--> Mosman Park). Apologies for my poorly constructed list ;)

No apology necessary. That section (including Observation City) is pretty bland from a Metro perspective. It's a bit of a grid.

Those two don't link up. Someone would have to extend the Mosman Park map, again :-) (although it'd be a new map called Peppermint Grove and be subject to small council rules)

There's a map that goes right around Herdsman up on TBT, so it must exist... (in colour). Is that your 'mostly completed one?
Jan 20, 2016 3:32 AM #
tRicky:
Yep that's the one. Juffy just put the whole thing up since it was originally my plan to use Herdsman until I got told/realised that crossing Pearson St might be a bit unsafe (I ended up extending the map out to the City Beach North map instead, where I originally didn't plan to go).

You can see there is still a lot of white around the lake where it should otherwise be yellow or yellow dots (or residential in the SE and E). I never got around to drawing or fieldchecking it. Herdsman on its own would be pretty uninteresting (more so now that the great sand pile is OOB) although I dare say would got a stack of people to it.

I don't know what happened to the contours on the TBT Churchlands map. They do exist.

21 km straight line or shortest legal route?

I've never run further than 15 km, but it sounds like fun and I'd give it a go.

At 1:10,000 the map would be about 2.6 m by 1 m.

That's why we'd use more than one map.

You could literally run on the map.
