Only I actually know what he is talking about... tough to explain, has to do with him carrying the controls.

The stands were banging together like maracas as he was carrying them?

More likely banging on the person carrying them, hence that person feeling beaten.

My mom and I don't use stands, we hook the controls on carabiners attached to a strap that you hang around yourself. They kept clanging into each other.

How do you hang them in the woods?

actually, I use stands for I Know My Way, and when I set I have the stands in a plastic tube, hung around my neck like an arrow carrier for archery, and the controls are on a belt in the right order. For MNOC, especially in the winter, we don't use stands as the ground is frozen solid.
