So you were doing sub-3:30/km over 600 m on your easy leg. I'd say you're in fine shape then.

I probably spent about 3mins of the 39mins at a max effort like pace yesterday.

Easy pace now 2:55min/km. Gee no wonder that stretch was hurting a bit.

Was it downhill or tailwind assisted?

No, it was flat with the wind from the right although 'Sten is in front of me' assisted. Granted it was actually around 3:20 pace until the last 50m when I went for the sprint finish.

Well the AP graph says it was 7m downhill but it also says the exact same stretch of path just a few minutes earlier was dead flat.
