full moon rising over the barren mountains in the purple tinged sunset? like that?

I agree. Almost a mystical experience!

You can call it rock climbing, but I think most people out there at Joshua Tree refer to it as Bouldering.

I remember leading up EBGB's back in the 80s. I don't think many people would call that "bouldering."

Could be. Nice ascent. Congratulations!

But some folks do when just climbing without protection, as I assume Matzah Ball was doing. In any case, there sure are a lot of boulders there.

it was bouldering for sure, didn't want to chance messing up running for weeks or months even w an ankle sprain or the like.

Looks like a beautiful climb, but why do they call it trad? I see what you mean, Tom!

Maybe it's trad because it was climbed before the trad-sport divide really got started, when there was nothing but trad. The name, incidentally, is a nifty pun on the feeling you might get if you were climbing in EBs, one of the earliest smooth-rubber climbing shoes. I never wore them, but I hear they didn't stick too well. That face is about as vertical as you can get and still stick to the rock, even with the best shoes.

I also remember climbing Illusion Dweller, and that one really is trad.
