I played a little football in my day; in my experience it's unique in the world of sport for its close and constant intermeshing of highly cerebral strategy with intense primal emotion.
I've also heard it said that the bond between squadmates can be the closest civilian approximation to the bond created by facing combat together. Seems a bit melodramatic to me, but I can at least understand where all the (inappropriate) football/war analogies in American society originate from.
