I get this a lot. What kind of shift will you be doing, lots of short fast stuff to sharpen up and increase leg speed?
Basically yes plus a bit less mileage. Worked before so theory is it should work again.
Pretty decent run I'd say. Based on your consistent winter I was expecting ~40th and I think with a bit more experience you would easily have managed that. It's one of the toughest races on the calendar!
Thanks, only 3rd xc race ever so a bit to learn. Think I'll go a bit harder at the start next time and see if that makes a difference.
A wise man (Bobby Quinn - multiple Scottish XC champ in the 90s) once told me that you should run the first 60s of an xc race as hard as you need to. If you run the second 60s too hard you'll pay for it later though. I've found this approach works well - go off hard to get out of trouble then consciously relax and settle into a rhythm.
I like that thinking, will have to give it a go next xc season!
