The road spds mean wearing road shoes and cleats that are a pain in the butt for walking. I suggest either shimano mountain spds (m540s) or since you commute so much, m324s, which mean also wearing mountain shoes which are more convenient for walking:

The problem with getting something you can walk in is that that bike clearly looks like a road bike, and not a commuting bike. Thus, if you wear shoes you can also walk in, you will face the collective fashion scorn from all other bikers on the road. Do you really want that? Someone will probably even write in to style man on bicycle magazine complaining about you.

So, it's gots to be real bike shoes.... Something like ....
