Hi Greg! I think you are talking about something similar to the network of fire ditches in the Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey? They're all over the Pakim Pond map, if I remember correctly.

Or firebreak is maybe the term you want?

Firebreak seems to be the closest term. And I guess you're right. They're closer to home than I thought. Thanks!

You're welcome! Yes, they are abundant in south Jersey, and I spent a lot of time trudging through them during preparation for events. I never did get very good at keeping track of them in competition. Did I cross 3 or 4 of those ditches? Is that a fire ditch or a trail? And so forth...

As a lifelong denizen of the western US, I can confirm the term "firebreak."

I suspect the Kiwi term is "firetrack."
