I started to go to the left, but changed my mind (it looked too trashy) and went over the top. It was my best split on the course, and very clear where I was the whole time.

"Over the top"? How? Wings? I intended to go right, around the cliffs, but saw a place near the end of them where I could climb up. Laugh at Route Gadget's little red immobile dot there. I now think that either left around and UP the reentrant, or way right, all the way to the bog, then relocate. Must be a good leg, to provide so much discussion.

And so many folks seemed to have some trouble with it. I wonder if the map is flaky in that area. I thought I was doing fine skirting the green and climbing the rocks, but proceeded to take a wrong angle across the flats.

I also noticed that some people did not have any trouble with number 8, and others wandered about for awhile (me included). Seems like it was a bingo control (such that those who looked to the left approaching it saw the flag) with the flag actually buried in a tiny reentrant SE of the circled one (as Nadia Popova pointed out to me) with rocks all around.

I think #7 was hard because if you went left, the vegetation just kept pushing you to the left so it was easy not to correct back to the right. It also didn't help that the knoll that a flag was on (a control not on the brown course but on the way to our control) was covered by the numeral 7 on our maps. I only deciphered that after the fact.

As for #8, I thought that one was pretty straightforward. I was actually reading the contours upside down for a while, but the hill just to the right of the line was pretty distinct and so I went over the top of that.
