ebone: I've run that course, and it has always seemed like it should be really fast, but I've never run a good time on it for some reason. So the race was done in heats? Six per team with three varsity races: 1/2, 3/4, and 5/6?
There was an invitational many years ago called the Roller Coaster Relays, in Auburn. There were five heats for the first through fifth runner from each team. It wasn't a relay, though. I think they just added the places.
Anyway, congrats on the second place!

TBorish: Thanks. The race actually had four varsity races 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, and 7/8. Then there was also a JV race (7 from each school) plus an open race where anyone (including adults) could run. After looking at the results in the paper, I'm guessing they added places or something like that, though Lakeside didn't have any girl 3/4 runners (since a couple of our runners couldn't make it) so I think our team score should be better than it is. This is the only cross country invitational I've been to, so is it common to break it down into heats like this or not?

ebone: I don't know how common it is. When I ran at Garfield, I think we went to just one or two invitationals in my four years. But my impression from watching results in the paper was that it's more common to mass start everyone, just as at a normal meet. Regarding Lakeside's score, maybe the Bellevue Invite organizers gave last place points to teams with no runners in a given heat.
