not an expert but here are my thoughts: the key to getting oxygen is likely not the number of strokes but being RELAXED and gliding and needing less.....I would guess that you are having to "try hard" to move forward in front crawl and that is taxing your aerobic system....requiring more oxygen....if you are relaxed you can breathe every stroke forever.....of course, swimming with a relaxed efficient stroke is easier said than done but that is likely what you would want to develop.....Ian and Phil (a swimmer also) should jump in here and offer their two cents....

Thanks, Steve! Ian helped me a couple of summers ago and there was a lot of improvement, then came a shoulder injury and I'm just getting back into swimming more regularly.
