Which one did you get?

Model 3. With the degree markings

You should try model 8 with colors.

we wanted degree marking so when syd and I are together (AR/Rogaine) she could read off the bearing and then I could plug it in.

Was looking at the colored one - what do the colors do for you? Just general bearings?

You never need to touch the dial. Just align the compass and remember where the north (or south) is pointing. Like "north should be at B".

Haha that sounds like a disaster waiting to happen for me.

Maybe I'll borrow one to try it though, see how it goes

I have a spare one you can borrow, it's not that bad.

I had a disaster once but I do not think it was caused by this.

Mr Wonderful:
Some use the no marking version, just using the needle to keep the map oriented correctly. I would like to try that sometime.

Regarding the colors, the color bands are narrower than many can run through the woods anyway (ie, no loss of actual accuracy versus 202°)

But then you need to carry the map with your compass hand, which does not work for me while running. I do have an unmarked compass, use it for control pickup.

Interesting. I always carry map and compass in the same hand (left).

I've tried to not reorient the dial a few times on my suunto, and just make sure the needle is aligned with the N lines. Works OK but requires more concentration for me, so I take the few seconds to adjust the dial.

I did not realize you didn't carry map & compass in the same hand!

I carry both in my right hand (normally people are left handed for map and compass).

A lot of my pickup is done no compass by virtue of absent-mindedness (plus I don't go very fast).

Well, I think my map moves from one hand to the other sometimes.

Mr Wonderful:
Mine occasionally moves to my pocket at water stops.
