It still goes through a tight/pain phase during the second mile of walking, then it's like everything got warmed up or stretched out and feels better continuing on.

I didn't have that problem at orienteering (felt okay the whole time) but I realized that was also much closer timewise to naproxin I have been taking in the morning. After work it might be wearing off.

Some other things have been better (leg is no longer excruciatingly painful when sleeping on my back) but it's still not perfect.

Attempting to schedule a massage to see if that can release any of the tight muscle stuff.

I have a 5K June 4th (registered for long ago) that I have done every year. Will walk that at least but hoping to feel up to a little more.

Sounds like you're on the right path. You could try increasing the dosage of naproxen, maybe taking one at night every other night until you don't have the tightness. I know I was always playing with getting the right amount in my system. Thumbs up, anyway!
