I am always happy to escape to a place with no cooling devices. I hate having to wear a sweater on a nice summer day.

I agree. It is a basement. I open the old barred basement windows...and let the coolness of the old limestone block foundation cool the air. But the humidity remains. The building has an air shaft running vertically up the center. And shaft windows in each apartment.

Before air conditioning, that air shaft provided a very efficient cooling, using the 'chimney effect' to draw that cool basement air upwards where it dumped silently into each apartment, creating a cooling effect. With the 10' ceilings, it was a surprisingly effective, free, and energy-efficient system!

But when you're rowing for half an hour, you still sweat like a pig!
