I think they are what makes that area so great. You have to really concentrate to know which blackboy the boulder should be behind. Makes it much more challenging and that makes it fun. Leaving the compass behind makes it even more fun. You should try compass free at Dryandra, the visibility there makes it a bit easy but the lack of contours makes it a decent challenge without a compass.

Better yet, do MTBO at Dryandra and play 'find the track'. That'll teach you distance estimation on the bike.
