it's coaching attitudes like that turn kids off running. we are trying to change that in ARK. ie running can be fun because it isn't always a penalty.
I was at Emma's track race last week and couldn't believe the attitudes of coaches and what they were saying to their athletes. bullying!
Our coach isn't mean but he is demanding, particularly of Ben, and for the most part it has been positive. This is his first team and in some ways it shows. We have had the bully coaches previously and they did the run as punishment thing too. I don't like it and the kids hate it but only bc it takes away from hitting and fielding which they prefer.
When I coached I had the boys practice running in a military formation that they had to maintain so they had to pace themselves and pay attention. They loved it and they were no longer leaving teammates behind. It also struck fear in the hearts of the opposition the few times they were allowed to do it pre game. It's not hard to make it fun and it's much easier to reward the good results than to punish the bad. When I did use running bc they were lazy I made it a relay and, guess what? They loved that too and it got their attention and improved their focus for the next game.
The best thing I learned from my coaching mentor was to emphasize the skills, doing the little things right and the wins take care of themselves and never have to be part of the stated goals. We won hundreds of games, a lot of tournaments and a couple provincial titles that way.
I wish you were my coach!
Running fun = good and will get the results
Running as punishment = old fashioned stupidity
