Impressive, but a longitudinal section showing the height of the mountains above it would have done more for me than the very long video of a concrete tube:) I remember climbing above the parking area on the old pass road and admiring the wildflowers as a boy...I think unless I was in a huge hurry for some reason I would still prefer that route.

The scary part of '50 years ago' is that to us it doesn't seem that long ago!

Traffic must have been terrible, so necessary to build this. 20 years in the building - now thats taking the long view! And here is the sectional illustration I was looking for, done very nicely (but unfortunately doesn't have a vertical scale), under 'description'

Yes indeed! Somehow they managed existing rail and road flow remarkably well despite capacity limits but at the price of environmental damage.
FYI Vertical scale - peak to trough is 2300m
