No 1-pins? Maybe I'm reading that scoresheet wrong...
My nomenclature is likely inconsistent, but I'm referring to spare opportunities where I knocked down 9 pins on the first ball. These are my favorite shots, because it is a very simple, elegant test of skill - either you get the ball within the appropriate angle to hit the pin or you do not.
Ah, ok, I thought you were referring to the desired balls in your upside-down scoring proposal.
But his upside-down scoring proposal is off -- easy to get a score of zero.
The BoD of CSU Bowling is considering two new events for future competitions:
- Bowling relay: teams of at most 3 for each club compete in tenpin. The team score for each frame is the best score from among the team members in that frame.
- Limbo bowling: an individual event; the goal is to minimize your score. Gutter balls count as ten, marks are scored in the usual way. A perfect game consists of knocking over a single pin with every ball, i.e. 20. This is mostly because I think it would be funny for people to be genuinely upset when they bowl a strike.
How so? Gutters count as 10, so 20 gutters would be a score of 200. Maybe we should call it bowling golf?
The simple way is to foot fault every time, just have to keep the ball out of the gutter in the process. Option 2 is to roll each ball very gently so it stops before reaching any pins.
Most fail-safe would be a foot fault that carries you into the lane and then just placing the ball down. Certainly counts as a zero.
If you want something hard, make the score the product of your score on each of 20 balls, lowest wins. DQ'd if your score is 0. Perfect score would be 1. All gutters would be a very high number.
Ah, I see. I suppose I should qualify my statement to define any outcome (including a foot fault) in which the number of pins knocked down is 0 yields a score of 10. The mechanic is similar to what you suggest. I should note that even I have never played such a game (limbo-bowling? Bowling golf? Reverse bowling?).
It's a lot easier to knock down just one pin in candlepins. I've even seen it done with the head pin, which is virtually impossible in tenpins.
