So in the north, the area around I think it's called Chatham road? was almost all good. (Basically that valley and the one that joins on to it from the top of Rahanui Road). The other area was the main mountain bike area and some of the surrounding hills.
The bit West of where you started is mint, but gets steeper and steeper, there were some new motorcross tracks in there when I checked it out.
The bit that you looped around (west off the ridge you came back along) had just been thinned, whats it like now? The other side (east) was clean low vis but I didn't think it would go far and be big enough.
The next bit as you headed up the hill towards Campbell road was nice-ish, but was a little green had nothing to really use for orienteering.
But the biggest problem was linking these together, that stream is uncrossable apart from the 2 bridges, and is prone to flash flooding - has the road still got a 5m deep gorge through it?
The recently thinned area looked fairly crap I think from memory (but I don't think it was too big an area), the low vis was super cool and didn't seem too tiny. South of the thinned bit was absolutely mint though, open clean white forest with a bit of nice, scattered pushable ferns.
Up the hill west of Campbell road wasn't too bad, there were some quite green areas (feat. bush lawyer) but we thought there were some alright parts and it could be worthwhile.
Yeah we noticed a road with a massive ditch through it although there was an alternative route next to it. I think if you were to try and use the two areas together it might pay to possibly cut a few routes through the vegetation - at least once cut you could use it again fairly easily. The flash flooding could be an issue though if you tried to combine the two areas especially for something major...
