real CX racers don't have cages.

i knew that, but i opted for attachments anyway for practical reasons. Took off the cages for races.

this shows an attachment method with hose clamps that doesn't involve modifying the frame. Might be worth a try, wouldn't work well for a carbon or alum frame with a formed non-round shape though.

And mine is aluminum with non-round tubes. It's really not a big deal. I don't ever see myself wanting to ride much more than a few hours on a single speed. If I really wanted to, I could always wear a pack. If I ever get a gravel bike, it will have multiple gears and cages.
