If you find that you like sprint orienteering, you should definitely check out the Vancouver Sprint Camp, which is every year in February, and draws a few carloads from Portland. It's 10 sessions from Friday afternoon through Sunday morning, with the most recent iteration being 5 solo races, 1 two-person relay race, and 4 training sessions. Plus group dinners each evening with presentations.
It's a great learning experience, and it's my favorite event of the year. It was also the inspiration for SART. I've been going up to Vancouver every year, so I felt like I needed to give back to the PNW sprint community, so I created our own event in Seattle.
That sounds like a lot of fun. And the train ride to Vancouver is nice...
