Discussion: Memory-O after Cell-O?

kupackman: How much do you think running the cell-o courses first helped your memory-o?

I think it would have been a much harder challenge had I done the memory-o first. As it was, I flipped over the CD, and I recognized the locations almost immediately. Even if they weren't controls I had on the cell-o, I saw just about all of the flags while I was out there, so I knew where they were.

ebone: Yeah, that made it quite a bit easier, although it's hard to tease apart the previous course advantage from the map-maker's advantage.

Stinky Pete: I think that the cell o is kinda of opposite of what i expected. Once Kerrie told me the direction to run, i told her what I was passing and the she would give me commands. I think that I covered ground faster than she expected and me telling her the terraine was better that she telling what she thought should be there (ie she couldn't tell the difference between a paved path and narrow road).

The placement were easy. I would like to try it on a harder course.

ebone: I agree with your observations, Glenn. I actually anticipated the two-way communication, though. It would indeed be fun to try a harder course.

barb: I am dying to try cell phone O!

I think this depends on the experience of the people on the team. I had a lot more experience than my teammate, so I found myself pretty much doing all of the directing when she was on the course. "Do this, do that, do you see this? Ok, turn there." I was pretty confident that we knew where we were because she would confirm my questions.

When I was on the course, it was a lot more interactive. She definitely was directing me, but I was giving her a lot of input of what I was seeing, asking her if things on the map made sense to where I said I was.

It would indeed be fun to try a harder course.

As long as you have cell coverage, you can turn any o' event into cell phone o'. And I'd guess that most WIOL courses will have good coverage. After running the long course, you could grab a teammate and try the two varsity courses as cell phone o'. I was thinking of doing that a time or two, just for kicks.

Good idea. I'd be up for that sometime.
