A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in

Glad that you get to immediately enjoy the shade of your labors!

I wonder how often the streamers will need to be replaced though. I have found that cows love to chew on orienteering detritus that I have hung. Perhaps only the sweatiest bits are enticing though.

Is that the relevant adage? I thought what would apply here would be: "Even the mightiest streamer casts no shade, especially when the winds are blowing." And the winds are almost always blowing (here).

You are right. Left untreated, the streamers quickly fall prey to the plastiferous cattle in these parts. So I am careful to thoroughly coat every streamer I set out in a highly effective deterrent paste made from a mixture of crushed parsley, kale, arugula, kale, escarole, and quinoa. Any cow foolish enough to eat a streamer treated with this paste would probably not be able to take 3 steps--four steps at most, were it especially hardy--before succumbing.

You forgot the rhubarb.

Polymerivorous. And you should add some kale.

Probably so. You can really never have enough kale, or so they say. So here is the amended deterrent paste recipe: crushed parsley, kale, arugula, kale, escarole, quinoa, and a whole lot of kale. There, that should do it.

You still forgot the rhubarb.

Last night, at a wedding on Ratlum Mountain, one of the appetizers appeared to be Peking ravioli. Sneaky things: they were stuffed with kale.

The vegetarian chili was also replete with kale. I am coming around on kale. Still not my first choice, but I am finding it more and more tolerable.

Charlie, that almost certainly proves you are not a cow. We are all so relieved! Did you forget the rhubarb?

I would like to forget as much rhubarb as possible.

And the point of eating something that you struggle to find tolerable, when there are so many delicious things to eat?

I passed on both the ravioli and the chili. :-)

(And I think it is unlikely that it will say on my tombstone -- "I wish I had eaten more kale")

Maybe: "I should have eaten kale a year sooner."

Well, it occurred to me that there was no reason not to have more than one thing on the tombstone. "I should have done it a year earlier" is still going to get the top billing.
