You might see a bunch of folks running around the "neighbourhood" with maps over the next few days. Cowboy Tough is an Adventure Racing World Series race that has been selected as the AR World Championship next year. GPS tracking is here; they started at 6 a.m.
I have seen those folks before. Maybe some of them out right now are leftovers from previous years, still attempting to complete the race. One can only imagine what a paddle leg must be like in December or January, with boats trapped in place by the ice Endurance fashion in one of those prairie lakes, completely exposed to the infernal cutting supercold winds, and equipped only with clothes meant for July.
Entirely possible. They're moving quickly on the North Platte River now though, so it must have melted at last.
Someone must have informed them about the presence of very hungry freshwater sharks in the North Platte.
That might explain why some teams are so far back.
I will go back to some of those teams likely being teams starting from previous years but not having finished yet; they are getting lapped. Having to over-winter mid-race will definitely take the starch out of you, even if you're cowboy tough.
Maybe it's not even the same racers. Like so many of those wild west expeditions, it might now be the children of racers who started in some previous edition of Cowboy Tough.
That's entirely possible. If you're stuck out on a frozen lake for the winter and you're a coed team and you're running out of possibilities for keeping warm...
