That happened to Browner when we were running in Burlington. Her doc used a syringe to flush out her ear.
But the crazier story is my friend Crash who was in her final hours of the Tour Divide. She was so tired and freaked out that she begged a fellow rider to do whatever it took. He got out a multi-tool, stuck some tiny pliers into her ear and pulled the bug out. This is not even remotely recommended but it prevented her from going stir crazy as she rode to the finish line!
Bah. I carry tick tweezers in my first aid kit which might work, but maybe some olive oil and a blunt-tipped plastic syringe wouldn't be a bad thing for loosening and flushing out bugs (or wax plugs).
Tick tweezers would have a bigger risk of perforating your eardrum than the pliers did - and they were risky too.
I could perform that sort of extraction no problem on someone else- harder to do on yourself.
