I've seen more deer in my area than usual, I think, about the same as your observations otherwise (number of bears is about 10x normal, but ten times zero is...). Maybe your deer have migrated up my way.

And Janet has posted a new Lyme article on that thread, that speaks of tick diseases on Martha's Vineyard...where I presume you'll be spending some time this summer?

May or may not make it to MV this summer. Going to Estonia in early August, which is when I might otherwise go. Have to see what's going on when I get back.

Around here I think we are seeing about 1 bear a week. Today's was quite a large one, strolling right through the yard outside my window while I was at the desk. He took a loop around the W side of the house, and the dog eventually became aware of him and went mildly nuts. Lucky for her she was inside because he appeared to be about a 400 lb specimen.

We haven't had deer or bears around these parts for a while, perhaps because there is ample foraging elsewhere. Or perhaps these dudes are keeping them away. They have been regular visitors since our return and seem to have found a ready supply of squirrels to feed on all week. Of course they are probably the family that nested high in the pine next to our driveway.

Another nice bear this morning, around 7. Similar path, from the middle field along heading toward my window, but this time headed right and around the house that way, disappearing down toward the vegetable garden. This one a bit smaller, maybe in the 200 lb range. Then about 10 minutes later Rhonda sighted a deer down at the bottom of the clearing W of the deck, browsing. Just don't see them all that often.

On the hawk front, one was screeching repeatedly yesterday afternoon, but I didn't see it, maybe just beyond the driveway somewhere when I was leaving to go on a bike ride.

We have had screeching since early June when the hatch got big enough. Now, like now out back, we hear a steady kwee-kwee of the juvenile wanting food. Don't hear the adult call as often but heard two of them on our run through Mcleans on Saturday.
