O Steve!: looks like Kari and I are seriously considering LAMM in Scotland in June...one of her best girlfriends married a soldier from the UK and we need to make a trip to see themr...I think they live near Inverness.....I looked at the Lowe Alpine Mountain Marathon and discovered the world of these 2 day events....I am really excited to give it a try...open hills, big feature, long distance orienteering in pairs with a camp out in the middle...we would probably do the novice division to max the fun and make sure we are not in over our heads but it would still give us at least 12 hours over 2 days....

iriharding: Haven't done any mountain marathons per se. These are big events and you probably should register very early to get in . Scotland can be very wet and windy or idyllic. June will have some long hours of daylight in Scotland (20+ hrs) . Flatlanders like you will need to train for the hills (up and especially the down) . Go for it!

Jerritt: 3 words--envy and jealousy. I would be happy to join you for hill workouts wwhen you get going.

O Steve!: Jerritt...are you familiar with these events?....sounds up your alley...the navigation is important but with big features, big climbs, open terrain the navigation SEEMS a bit less intense and fast running a bit more important....an event that would play to your strengths....

O Steve!: here is a proposal...we actually have a version of this this weekend.....an informal competition...we combine the time scores from the Red sat course, night O and Minnegoat and come up with a overall winner from the weekend....and we get to sleep in a nice bed...

Jerritt: I think this is a great idea. I am not sure I am able to do all the events. Maybe one of our math geeks/engineers could come up with a quick handicap system to level things a little bit. I would pitch in for a prize for overall.

O Steve!: which events are you doing?....

#  Posted 2007-10-04 02:03:34
Jerritt: I want to do them all, but childcare is an issue. I get the Minnegoat for sure. Molly (at this point) gets the night-o and I think we can both get a course in on Sat.

Proposal:
Can Pete (easily) figure out or avg. per k time based on MNOC results page. I have no idea. If so, then we do percentage off your own per k avg. Best percentage improvement wins. Not sure its totally fair, but its a place to start.

Jerritt: Let's just keep the conversation going before Ian even has a chance to reply.

That looks awesome.

I think you should do it. I would also suggest maybe going for a 24 ROGAINE in preparation for the event.

Jerritt: BTW, I just saw that Ian and I are tied in the ranking section. I have been chasing him for a long time. Maybe he and I need a little side bet for this weekend.

We can call it (named after Ian's favorite President) "The Decider."

#  Posted 2007-10-04 04:13:46
O Steve!: lets have a "Jerritt" division....we will just count the events you do....Red and Minnegoat?....

who needs Ian when we have his log to chat on....

We are very likely to do LAMM...Kari has an email in to her friend and once we nail down a date we will get airfare (ouch!) we will then sign up....they are not accepting entry till Jan.....If all goes as planned we will be doing this....gives me something to look forward to that captures my/our interest...unique event..

iriharding: whoa.... I just take a few hours break from AP and get some 3* work done and I find that an enormous conspiracy has brewed in my absence. ..... hanidcaps... most improved and a whole bunch of other wimpy ideas being tossed around .

OK .... the decider : Red sat course + night O + minnegoat straight time (or whatever comdo you compete in) . Winner gets a "Big Butt" Beer at the Telemark bar .

Back to original subject: the LAMM : Scotland is big hills wide open spaces, mists / fog and climbs of 800m + from valley to summits . You don't want to head up/down the wrong valley ... you could be hours off track .

O Steve!: ...yeah, I have been looking at the maps and realized its very different navigation than what we do locally, here its small features, perhaps more frequent mistakes but smaller consequence....LAMM: Big features, less frequent mistakes, BIG consequences....Ive read enough reports of placing the point on the map wrong by misreading the grid...takes a team 1k away from the right spot...we will need to take our time and double check the points...also dont like that the control flags seem to be lying on the ground in most spots....but the wide open spaces makes being led into a control more likely AS LONG as you know its your control on your course....check the codes....

..again the Novice division seems to be calling our name...you still get 1900 or 2000 ft of climbing each day on the Novice course.....
