| jtorranc: | The Czech organisers have put up a link to an online O map server with many of the pre-existing maps of embargoed areas posted. Figuring we might as well not all go through the same online legwork, I've posted one of them at http://ocanadaelite.blogspot.com/. If anyone knows how to fix the problem I describe in the post that limits what software can open the image, do tell so any fix can be applied to the other maps I downloaded before I post them too. Thanks. |

| wilsmith: | I've taken the liberty to download and laser-print the maps from the Czech map archive website that I could identify as being relevant. I haven't really looked at them yet, but I can say from the file sizes that they are definitely not really high-resolution files and the print quality has suffered accordingly.
FWIW, in my discussions with one of the Czechs at WOC, my impression was that the middle distance terrain would actually be a bit more technical than what was shown on the maps that are available in the embargoed area. A few more hilltops and some rocky technical areas; the available maps online do not cover the entire area so it's hard to say. I also heard there was talk of making the middle distance courses a net downhill race to increase the speed and technical difficulty. The sprint areas look deadly flat and fast, and not as much of the super-technical "old city" stuff as I expected, at least. I'm thinking the speedy runners will definitely like that area. My view of the long/relay areas is that those will mainly be a physical test; they look quite runnable so the pace will necessarily be high, and the areas are far from flat, so there will be some climbs. Lots of climbs.... In comparison, the Hungary WOC 2009 areas look much more technical and interesting. And they kiindly have provided very high-resolution files of the entire embargoed areas. Wish all WOC organizers would take the trouble to do this too! |
