I was watching out for crosscurrent but it is difficult to see as a swimmer exactly where you are. The line of safety kayaks seem to go with the swimmers and so they are not a reliable nav aid. Swimming straight at the finish line means that you will go in a wide loop with a cross current.

It takes a lot of will power (and good calculating of current strength) to swim straight towards something other than the finish. Once you start being pulled wide there is not much you can do other than try to correct belatedly for it. It cost me about 5 minutes this time I reckon.
