Well put. One has take the risk (and there is risk, physical and mental) of periodically spelunking in that pain cave during training, in order achieve maximize performance in races (which by definition involves going deep in the pain cave). I did my best road and track running (30-45 years ago) during the periods when I was regularly doing intervals that took me into that cave.
But I can't resist noting that I am having trouble reconciling this log entry ("explore your pain cave") with the immediate preceding log entry ("main focus this week is rest")!
