In all my years on AP, I don't think I have ever derived as much pleasure from reading one day's log entry! My grin grew wider and wider as I read on, and in the end you left me with quite a large dose of inspiration. You've illustrated so beautifully how a person can gain deep satisfaction from engaging in a challenge that is meaningful to *you*, paying attention to the parameters that matter to *you*. Congratulations Val on a great accomplishment and the fabulous description thereof.
Nice writeup, Valerie! Almost makes me want to do an adventure race someday...almost. And the photos are a nice touch and add a lot to the story.
My favorite parts: "I kept telling myself not to cry," scooping up a random gel pack off the ground and eating it, and thinking of the big grin Scott would have had reading about your adventure. He was a great person whose life ended far too early and far too tragically. I would love to do the race with you next year.
@ o-maps - I was touched by your comment. And, then the rest piled on, and the smile kept on going and going. :) Thank you all!
kissy - you are on!! Lining up as many fab 50s and 60s as possible for next year. All are welcome!
And, I thought of you in particular when I wanted to cry.
