Because Pacific NW has rain and far far fewer nettles...

Nettles like a lot of nitrogen in the soil (which is why they are plentiful below garderobe holes in castle moats), so they are plentiful around human habitation & also where humans have been farming animals. But I'm not sure that that explains the difference in this case.

Sorry; my ignorance there. A consequence of living somewhere with "rain" AND an abundance of... um... "nitrogenous materials."
