Required - and awesome! We had to carry one four-person bothy, plus bivvies, but no sleeping bags or tents. It was an interesting decision on the RD's part and mostly worked for us, though it made stopping on the monster bike a little tricky, since we weren't carrying tents or bags with us for a more quality sleep.
